Environmental Division Mission Statement

The mission of the Environmental Division is to research, monitor, assess, manage, use, conserve, protect, and restore the natural resources of the Confederated Tribes' Ancestral Territory, consistent with Tribal values. This mission includes support of the planned management of Tribal infrastructure including realty, transportation systems, emergency response systems, and other infrastructure which the Tribes may own or in which the Tribes may have an interest.

Goal 1. Return of Tribal Lands.

  • Secure the return of Tribal forest lands from the Siuslaw National Forest.
  • Secure the return of Gregory Point / Chiefs Island (Bal’diyaka) and Umpqua Eden (Takimiya).

Goal 2. Expand the exercise of Tribal sovereignty, self-determination, and governmental capacity.

  • Complete current environmental protection capacity building projects funded by the US Environmental Protection Agency, and pursue other opportunities offered through the EPA Indian General Assistance Program and other sources.
  • Integrate GIS into Department of Natural Resources projects and databases while coordinating with other Tribal Departments as appropriate.
  • Implement the Tribal Transportation Program, including maintaining and updating the Tribal Transportation Inventory, Tribal Transportation Improvement Project Priorities, and Tribal Transportation Plan, and managing transportation improvement projects.
  • Implement the Tribal Realty Program,  including preliminary assessments, shepherding the fee-to-trust process, and coordinating projects related to the maintenance and management of realty but which do not fall directly under a specific Department or Program such as Housing, Economic Development, Tribal Forest, etc. (e.g. matters such as cell tower cell tower proposals; easement issues; other neighbor relations; Coos Head reoccupation; property management including brushing, landscaping, and fencing; etc.)
  • Work with other departments and coordinate as appropriate on emergency preparedness including planning and mitigation.

Goal 3. Maintain and improve Tribal environmental quality.

  • Research parameters, processes, functions, and influences of significance to the Tribal environment.
  • Develop, implement, and update assessment and monitoring programs for the Tribal environment.
  • Develop, implement, and update environmental quality protection policies and ordinances.
  • Develop and implement environmental quality improvement projects.

Goal 4. Manage Tribal natural resources.

  • Develop, implement, and update assessment and monitoring programs for Tribal natural resources.
  • Develop, implement, and update resource conservation, management, and restoration plans.
  • Develop, implement, and update resource conservation and management policies and ordinances.
